Natural Birth Philosophy

BreshaunI believe in the Midwives Model of Care (™), which understands birth as a normal life process. Working in this model implies monitoring the physical, psychological, and social well-being of the mother throughout the childbearing year; providing the mother with individualized education, counseling, and prenatal care, continuous, hands-on assistance during active labor and delivery, and postpartum support; minimizing technological interventions; and identifying and referring women who require obstetrical attention.

I strongly believe in the right and the responsibility of every pregnant woman to choose her birth attendants and the location of her birth. I support her access to high-quality, factual information so she can make maximally informed decisions throughout her pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Healthy women wishing to forego the use of pain medication and other technological interventions in labor are often good candidates for midwifery care, and for homebirth. My work is dedicated to serving and supporting those women, a largely self-selecting group. I am opposed to coercion and fearmongering in connection with childbirth, and strive to inspire courage in the face of childbirth’s unknowns. With much gratitude I acknowledge the lifesaving and health-preserving value of medical intervention when used appropriately.
